Autism and Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia and Autism have many different symptoms but also some similar ones. It can be difficult to differentiate between the two during early ages. I was surprised to hear that that doctor of one of the families did not do any sort of assessment on the first girl, and just labeled her as a very very active baby. I feel even watching some of those early videos that it was clear something was not right. She did not make eye contact for very long, she did fuss more then normal when the parents tried to hold her. Most infants enjoy being coddled or held by a caregiver, she however did not. At an early age it can be difficult to come to an exact diagnosis, especially with something as complicated as Schizophrenia or Autism, but there are some signals that are usually present. There are some assessments that can diagnose ASD as early as 3 months. I would want the doctor to at least try something like that if I was a parent and was seeing some of the symptoms that the daughter in the video was displaying. As children get older it can become more clear what the diagnosis is but an early diagnosis can really help a child get benefits and treatment. It is difficult, especially as first time parents to be aware of some of the symptoms, however that is why they depend on doctors and other medical professionals to help. It took them five years to get a diagnosis, if the video is correct, and that is way too long, their doctor should have been showing more interest and using tools that were available to him, which is what I would have done if i was a doctor, or what I would have asked for as a parent. There is no doubt that what those parents are going through is difficult, but they are not the first and a well trained pediatrician who is familiar with assessments can be a very valuable asset.
