In my current job, I see comorbidity on a daily basis. The majority of our kids have more than one diagnosis most of which include Autism or PDD-NOS and then some other psychiatric diagnosis such as anxiety, OCD, etc. I found this video very interesting because I had never really thought about how these children that I work with got to their diagnoses I just knew what they were. The more that I thought about it throughout the day today at work the more I realized just how difficult it can be to differentiate between certain autism symptoms and symptoms that occur due to some other disorder such as OCD. I would have to agree with Sally Ozonoff when she says that the best idea is to follow the rule of Occam's razor. It is best to treat the behaviors or symptoms from just a single diagnostic perspective at first and if these treatments fail then that indicates that it is time to explore other options including the possibility that there could be another disorder that is causing these behaviors or symptoms.
The other thing that was fun to here for me was the mention of Deb Fein's study but that is purely personal because I actually worked on one of her studies when I was in college. It was interesting to hear where some of her findings have ended up recently because it has been a few years since I worked under her.
